How Pietro Cataudella uses creative process to appreciate simple beauty

Pietro’s project, @CityLiveSketch, was born in 2014 when he decided to create different and creative contents to share with his friends and followers. He combined his passions for drawing and photography, creating “postcards 2.0” of the places he visited. Since then he’s continued with the goal of amazing people and sharing the beauty of his country.

Why do you love creating?

Creating is the way I prefer to express myself, my feelings and I love the idea to be able to amaze someone with my images.

Describe your creative process. Do you have rituals to making?

Initially I start thinking about a simple idea, because I think that real beauty is simple things. This is for sure the most difficult part of the entire process. When I find this idea, I create drafts of the final image on paper, placing all the elements in a harmonious way. Then I realize the drawing and I combine it with the photo in photoshop.

What tips do you have for beginners?

My advice is to do a lot of practice, spending time to improve yourself and to create always something new.

What do you do when you don’t know what to make?

In this situation I look at my old photos taken during my travels, looking for some new source of inspiration. Sometimes I also decide to take a walk or to travel to take new photographs to edit with my drawings.

How do you fill your inspiration well?

I try to find inspiration during everything I do, like listening music, reading a book, traveling or watching a film. In this way I try to overcome the difficulty of finding a new idea.

How do you find time to make things?

It’s hard to find time to create all that comes to mind, so I have to select just some of my ideas and I realize them during the weekend or during the evening.

How do you go from beginner to expert?

I don’t think I’m an expert. I never studied art, drawing, design or or similar disciplines. I’ve only done a lot of practice, experimenting new things, techniques and drawing tools.

What are your must have supplies?

For sure a sketchbook and a pencil, because thanks to them I can do the initial draft to fix and visualize the idea.

What is your favorite technique? Any tips?

I love to draw buildings and landscape with pencils and pens. Initially I recommend to create with pencil the body of the view you want to represent (drawing simple geometric shapes). Then start to add with pencil other simple lines and after start adding more details with pen, form the biggest to the smallest. At the end add shades with pencil or pens.

Do you feel like your art reflects your personality? How do you get it to look like you?

Absolutely. I think this is possible just because I only draw what I really like.
