How Billie Miles Gains Confidence Through Daily Art Practice

After retiring from 40 years in the technology industry, Billie is a late bloomer. Art journaling has become a means to explore her inner and outer life, and have crazy fun!

How do you live a creative life?

I try to do art every day. I also spend time looking at art online, and seek out instruction (YouTube, online classes, GM) on a variety of techniques.

Do you put your life into your art journal? Or is it focused on technique?

I have been focused on technique for the most part. Lately there are bits of my life slipping in, unexpectedly! I’d like to be more intentional about that, using my art journaling practice to unravel things in my life.

What is your biggest barrier to creating?

Confidence. I doubt what I can do, compare myself to others (spoiler alert – I always fall short!). I’d like to be more carefree and relaxed.

How do you get over that hurdle?

I’m not sure I do get over that hurdle. I also believe that the more art I do, the easier it will become. Eventually, I’ll find my way. I muddle through it.

What has been your biggest lesson when it comes to creating art?

To just keep doing it. To show up. I am so grateful to have the time, space and circumstances to explore techniques, mediums, color, shapes, all of it!

In How to Start Art Journaling, we’ll walk you through the art of art journaling, including how to start doing (🙌) and make your very first art journal page (even if you’ve never even opened an art journal before).

What is your favourite art journal page you’ve ever made? Why is it your favourite?

I don’t think I’ve made my favorite yet?!

Have you ever actively disliked a page you’ve made? What did you do with it?

I’ve thrown it away or covered it with gesso.

What’s the best art advice you’ve ever received?

Ask my inner critic to leave the room.

What does community do for your creating?

The community supports, encourages, advises, teaches, and provides laughter. The circle of friends I’ve made is invaluable not for my art, but for me – the whole person.

Who would you like to celebrate in the Get Messy community?

There are so many – Cindy, Debbie, Jessica, Sarah, Heidi, Courtney, Lynda, Michelle, Serena, Lisa, Lindsey, Vanessa. And – Lauren & Caylee for creating GM – where I met all of those lovelies.
