Messy Conversations is a series of interviews with amazing art journalers who share their favorite tools, tips and why they art journal. You’ll get an exclusive peek into their art journal pages and their process. We have a top-notch line up of incredibly artists who will appear on the show each month. We hope that these interviews educate, encourage and inspire you to make something before it’s even over.

Divyam is a delightful comic artist as well as a fine artist. She makes beautiful work. We have collaborated on a couple of different projects so she’s a lot of fun to work with personally. She’s also a storyteller. She’s a yoga practitioner. She has a beautiful melodic soothing voice that we all get really excited when she does her videos for the creative team because her voice is just lovely and soothing and makes you feel all special and safe.

TAKEAWAYS

  • Her cartoon drawings
  • How music keeps her focused
  • The juxtaposition yet natural blending of the cute cartoon figures with the dark science fiction and fantasy stories
  • How art journaling helps her connect with her deep inner thoughts

Tips for Beginners

  1. Just keep doing, whatever it is. Keep showing up.
  2. Start with less time. You’ll feel less pressure for the result to be amazing. Search Lynda Barry on YouTube.
  3. Trust what you want to do, even if it seems really strange and no one else is doing it, that’s even better.

Extraordinary Thoughts

I get inspired from things which nourish my own experience.

The whole thing that brings you to want to do it in the first place is your enjoyment and your love of what you’re doing.

If you reach a point where you ever think of yourself as an expert, something’s probably missing.

One of the reasons why I love art making art and art journaling is because of this connection with something beneath the surface in myself… almost like an underground river.

Divyam Chaya Bernstein

Divyam is a writer and cartoonist living in London. Her favourite part of of art journaling is that no matter what is going on, whatever mood she is in, she always feels so much better after doodling and throwing some paint around. The worst thing about about art journaling is that she often neglects all sorts of important things on her to do list and spends her time making art instead. Her favourite dinosaur is the Zigongosaurus.
